We then subtract that value from the next highest multiple of 10, in this case, 80, giving us a value of 4. Using the above example, the formula would appear as follows: 3 × (5 + 0 + 6 + 6 + 0 + 1) + (9 + 0 + 7 + 5 + 1) The values in the parentheses are the digit positions for the 11 numbers as read from left to right. This value is generated using the formula below. This is known as the Modulo Check Character. The right-most value is automatically generated. The right-set of 5 digits represent the product code. The left-set of 5 digits represent the manufacturer code. The left-most value defines the type of barcode. The guards serve as borders for the scanner to know where the start and endpoints of the relevant information are located. ![]() These are fixed in design and do not change with different products. The highlighted areas below are known as the “guards”. ( click any of the following images for a larger view) Main Parts of a Barcode The Guards Like any good magic trick, it looks complex but it’s really quite simple once you understand it. Upon entering the above values, the barcode is generated. We begin our journey by entering three values into our spreadsheet: Thank you Boko Moko (on YouTube), David Barahona and Max Vitzliputzli (on YouTube) for sending us your versions! Scroll all the way down to download them. We have three versions: Barcodes with Index & MATCH, OFFSET & VLOOKUP. Scroll down to download the Macro-Free Barcode Generator Excel files that were sent to us by our community members. Several of these posts will be linked at the end of the discussion. Each of the main components is covered in greater detail in various posts here at XelPlus. We won’t be taking a deep dive to dissect every step of the process. We will examine the main components of Pete’s creation at a high level. It sounds like a lot to deal with, and I’m certain it took Pete more than a lunch break to develop. The main components of this exercise include ( but are not limited to): This Excel barcode generator is a way to practice several skills that can be used in myriads of other Excel situations. ![]() There are many proprietary barcode generators available that require very little effort to use. Pete concedes that Excel is not the best program to use for barcode generation. Pete sent XelPlus a message letting us know that he had been reading up on how barcodes are compiled and how they work.īecause Pete loves all things Excel, he felt compelled to recreate the process of barcode creation in Excel. You may remember Pete from such hits as “ Excel Formula to Convert Numbers to Words”. One of our favorite contributors at XelPlus, Pete M., a commercial manager and consultant, took the time to create a barcode generator in Excel. But have you ever wondered what all those lines and numbers represent? Even better, have you ever thought about creating barcodes in Excel? We see barcodes on almost all the products we purchase. The UPC-A barcode format is a 12-digit numeric that is assigned to each trade item/product. ![]() This post will focus on the UPC-A barcode format. There are dozens of barcode formats in the world, and it would take a book ( remember books?) to explain them all. In this one-of-a-kind XelPlus post, we look at how to create a UPC ( Universal Product Code) barcode.
